Cobia, also known as sea bream, bamboo five, sea grass, and sea bass, is a popular fish found across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as the Southwest Pacific. Its range extends northward to the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea, though it is not commonly found in the eastern Pacific. This species has a streamlined, rounded body with a flat, wide head and a forward-facing mouth that appears nearly horizontal and broad. The back is dark brown, transitioning into a distinct silver longitudinal stripe, while the belly is pale in color. Its dorsal fin is short and spiny, featuring 2 to 3 weak spines, and its caudal fin is rounded in juveniles, becoming semilunar in adults. Cobia can grow up to 2 meters in length and weigh as much as 50 kilograms.
The fish is highly buoyant and typically inhabits waters near the continental shelf. It primarily feeds on crustaceans and often carries eggs on its body. In recent years, cobia has been successfully bred in Taiwan, paving the way for large-scale aquaculture. Just 30 days after hatching, fry can reach a total length of about 6 centimeters. Under controlled farming conditions, cobia can grow to 1–2 kilograms within six months, 3–5 kilograms after one year, and reach 10 kilograms by the age of two. During growth, the shape of the caudal fin changes: at 130 cm, it is pointed, while at 180 cm, it becomes slightly truncated. Above 300 cm, the tail becomes more deeply indented, with the upper lobe slightly longer than the lower one. To prevent cannibalism and ensure proper feeding, larvae and fry are separated during the breeding process.
