In recent days, a severe frost has coated the branches and fruit trees across Zhuzhou City, leaving many orchards in a critical condition. Experts from the local agricultural bureau have issued urgent warnings to farmers, urging them not to shake the trees or use any tools to remove the ice, as this could cause further damage. Instead, they recommend warming the orchard through controlled burning methods.
"The current freeze is more damaging than the winter of 1991," said an official from the Cash Crops Work Station under the Zhuzhou Agriculture Bureau on January 22. "Immediate action is necessary to minimize losses." The official visited two citrus farms in Zhuzhou County to assess the damage and provide guidance on frost protection. At the site, thick layers of ice—up to 1 cm in thickness—were found covering the citrus branches. Many limbs had snapped under the weight, and most leaves were curled, showing severe cold injury.
Zhuzhou City has approximately 18,000 hectares of fruit trees, including 11,000 hectares of citrus, with an annual production of around 150,000 tons. The prolonged freezing weather has hit evergreen fruit trees particularly hard, and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The official emphasized that farmers must take the frost damage seriously and implement preventive measures. Shaking the trees or using tools to remove ice is strongly discouraged, as it can injure tender leaves and young branches, worsening the situation. The best approach is to use smoke generators placed every 5 to 10 meters in the orchard to create a warming effect and protect the crops.
To help trees recover quickly, farmers are advised to perform soil cultivation, pruning, drainage, and fertilization. Local agricultural departments have already sent teams to assist in disaster relief efforts. Farmers are encouraged to follow the guidance provided by agricultural technicians to ensure the best possible recovery.
With the right care and timely intervention, the impact of the frost can be reduced, helping to preserve the future of the orchards and the livelihoods of the farmers.
