Transformation of Patent Achievements Jiang Miao Turns Waste into Treasure

Laiwu City, located in Shandong Province, is famously known as the "Hometown of Chinese Ginger." Every year, more than 300,000 mu of land are dedicated to ginger cultivation. However, the strong spicy flavor of ginger sprouts makes them unsuitable for consumption by animals. After each harvest, approximately 400,000 tons of ginger sprouts end up as waste. In 1996, Zhen Guangming, the chairman of Zhenpu Feed Co., Ltd., successfully conducted experiments using ginger sprouts as animal feed, solving a major challenge in the industry. By 1998, he had developed effective storage methods for these sprouts, significantly reducing waste. In 2003, Zhen Guangming founded the Zhenpu Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Science and Technology Center, focusing on research and development of healthy feed for livestock and poultry. His breakthrough came in 2004 when he invented a special health feed for animals, which earned him a national invention patent. This innovation filled a critical gap in the domestic feed industry and earned him prestigious awards, including the Gold Award at the "German International Patent Technology Achievement Fair." The image shows workers at Laiwu City Zhaopu Feed Co., Ltd. busy processing ginger sprouts—first crushing them, then drying and transforming them into nutritious feed for livestock and poultry. This innovative approach not only reduces waste but also adds value to what was once considered a byproduct. Through continuous research and development, Zhen Guangming has turned a local agricultural challenge into a sustainable business opportunity, benefiting both the environment and the economy. His work highlights the importance of innovation in agriculture and the potential of underutilized resources.
