Can extract stem cells without damaging the embryo

Release date: 2006-10-31

On October 26, according to Xinhua News Agency, a breakthrough in stem cell research was reported from the United States. Scientists have successfully extracted cells from mouse embryos without causing any harm to them, and then cultivated embryonic stem cells in the lab. This development could potentially pave the way for more ethical approaches in stem cell research.

The study, published on the website of *Nature* magazine, details a method developed by researchers at Cornell University's Weill Medical School. Instead of destroying the embryos, the team took advantage of a group of 20–25 cells known as the "inner cell mass" from a blastocyst. They used an enzyme to gently separate these cells, which were then used to grow embryonic stem cells. The embryos were returned to the womb after the extraction, minimizing any potential damage.

Through this process, the scientists were able to generate embryonic stem cells using three-cell extracts, but not with one or two. Using four blastocysts, they created four different stem cell lines, resulting in a 25% success rate. While this is still low, it represents a promising step forward in the field.

The researchers believe that this technique could be adapted for human use in the future. Women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) might one day be able to use this method to obtain stem cells for research or even for future medical treatments for their children. This approach avoids the ethical concerns often associated with traditional embryo destruction methods.

Obtaining human embryonic stem cells without harming the embryo has long been a goal for many scientists. Stem cell research holds great promise for treating a wide range of diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and liver cirrhosis. As technology advances, such techniques may become more refined and widely applicable.
