Harbin Institute of Technology launches new computer tongue image analysis system

Release date: 2006-10-26

In 2006, Harbin Institute of Technology introduced an innovative computer-based system for analyzing tongue-related diseases using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnostic methods. The system allows medical professionals to capture a patient's tongue image and input it into a computer for further analysis. This technology enables a more accurate and scientific approach to diagnosing various health conditions based on the visual characteristics of the tongue. Developed in collaboration with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the 21st Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the system has been officially evaluated by a panel of experts. According to the expert group, this research represents a significant breakthrough in the field of medical biometrics, offering both theoretical importance and practical value in clinical settings. The results of the study are considered to be at an international leading level. The project also established objective modeling techniques for human health indicators and developed specific models for conditions such as appendicitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, acute and chronic pancreatitis, gastritis, and anemia. Additionally, the system created a comprehensive library of tongue samples and images, along with advanced feature extraction technologies. Notably, the development of objective modeling for health indices, combined with color analysis of the tongue and the creation of a large-scale tongue image database, marked a first in China. The findings have been widely recognized by medical professionals and are seen as a promising step toward integrating traditional practices with modern technology in healthcare.
