How to prevent bacterial pox

Mushroom pockmarking, also known as stain disease, is a fungal infection caused by *Pseudomonas fluorescens*. This disease typically originates from contaminated soil, water, or insects and spreads through human activity and farming tools. Affected mushrooms develop small, needle-like depressions on their caps, which gradually expand, leading to discoloration and the formation of irregular pockmark-like patterns—hence the name "pockmarking." In some cases, a milky, luminous discharge can be seen oozing from the affected areas, especially around the stem. Prevention is key in managing this disease. First, it's important to avoid splashing mud onto the mushroom caps during handling or irrigation. Second, after watering, ensuring proper ventilation helps the mushrooms dry quickly, reducing the risk of excessive moisture that can encourage bacterial growth. Lastly, applying a thin layer of lime powder over the growing medium or using a sodium hypochlorite solution for spraying can significantly reduce the occurrence and spread of the disease. By maintaining clean growing conditions and practicing good hygiene, growers can effectively minimize the impact of pockmarking on their mushroom crops. Regular monitoring and early intervention are essential to prevent widespread damage.
