Measures for cultivating goldfish broodstock after wintering

1. Adjust the water quality of the broodstock. During the wintering period, goldfish are typically kept in the same pool with "old water" that is not fully replaced. Even if the water becomes too cloudy, only a portion of the old water is removed and replaced with fresh water. However, once spring arrives, it's recommended to replace most of the old water with new water in the original pond. You don’t need to change the water daily—only when necessary based on water quality changes. As temperatures rise after the thaw, the water quality can deteriorate quickly, so a thorough water change is essential. Aim for a water change every other week to maintain a healthy environment.

2. Feed fresh live bait regularly. The primary food source for goldfish during this time is red worms, but it's important not to overfeed them. Provide just enough so that the fish can consume it within two hours. Overfeeding can lead to poor water quality and cause the broodstock to become overweight, which may negatively affect their spawning performance.

3. Minimize the use of medication. Spring is a critical time for goldfish as they begin to ovulate, and their eggs develop. Excessive or frequent use of medications can interfere with the breeding process and even harm the fry’s health and vitality. The best approach is to maintain clean water, provide high-quality live food, and prevent disease naturally. This helps ensure the broodstock remains healthy and ready for spawning.

4. Protect the moss on the pond walls. Moss plays an important role in filtering the water and producing oxygen through photosynthesis. It contributes to a balanced and natural ecosystem for your goldfish. When changing the water, avoid scrubbing the bottom or removing all the moss from the walls. Leave some moss in place to support water clarity and oxygen levels. If the pond bottom is cleaned too thoroughly, sunlight reflecting off the surface can cause the fish to float near the top all day, which can hinder their normal growth. Additionally, leftover food can worsen water quality and potentially lead to fish deaths.
