As one of the premium products promoted by Tianjin Xueqing Agricultural Product Cooperatives, Black Sweet Potato has gained widespread recognition and was selected to represent Tianjin City at the annual "Beijing International Agricultural Products Fair." It attracted significant attention from both consumers and supermarket buyers. In response to growing market demand, under the technical guidance of the Wuqing District Agricultural Technology Extension Center, the "Tianjin Xueqing Agricultural Product Production and Marketing Cooperative" has established over 1,000 acres of pollution-free black sweet potato fields, involving 420 households. The cooperative is expected to bring more than 1,200 tons of black sweet potatoes to market during the "two festivals" period, which will not only satisfy consumer needs but also increase farmers' income by approximately 1,100 yuan per household.
Sweet potatoes, also known as yams or hawthorn, have long been familiar to older generations. During the 1960s and 1970s, they were one of the most essential foods that helped people overcome hardship. However, after the reform and opening up, their role in daily diets gradually diminished. With rising living standards, modern diseases such as obesity, hypertension, and digestive tract cancers have become more prevalent, prompting a reevaluation of dietary habits. As a result, foods like sweet potatoes, cornmeal, and wild vegetables have made a comeback on modern tables.
In response to this shift, professionals from the Wuqing District Agricultural Technology Extension Center began introducing and testing black sweet potatoes in 2003. After more than three years of research and experimentation, they not only developed standardized cultivation techniques but also uncovered the nutritional potential of black sweet potatoes. Compared to regular sweet potatoes, black sweet potatoes are rich in dietary fiber, which helps improve digestion, promotes bowel movements, and reduces the time harmful substances stay in the intestines, thus helping to prevent cancer. They also aid in weight loss and slow down the aging process. Additionally, they contain mucoprotein, which can help prevent arterial hardening.
In countries like the United States and Japan, sweet potatoes are considered "healthy foods" and even "space foods." Black sweet potatoes go beyond that—they are selenium-enriched, containing more than 20 times the selenium found in regular sweet potatoes. Selenium is an essential trace element that boosts immunity and acts as a powerful inhibitor against liver cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, and skin cancer. This makes black sweet potatoes not only a nutritious food but also a valuable health booster for modern lifestyles.
