As one of the premium products promoted by the Tianjin Xueqing Agricultural Product Cooperatives, the Black Sweet Potato made a notable appearance at the annual "Beijing International Agricultural Products Fair," representing Tianjin City. The product attracted significant attention from both consumers and merchants, including supermarket buyers, who showed great interest in its unique flavor and health benefits.
To meet growing market demand, under the technical guidance of the Wuqing District Agricultural Technology Extension Center, the Tianjin Xueqing Agricultural Product Production and Marketing Cooperative has now established over 1,000 acres of pollution-free black sweet potato fields, involving 420 farming households. With the upcoming "two festivals" period, the cooperative expects to bring more than 1,200 tons of black sweet potatoes to the market. This not only helps meet consumer needs but also brings an additional income of approximately 1,100 yuan per grower, contributing to rural economic development.
Sweet potatoes, also known as yams or hawthorn, were once a staple food during the difficult times of the 1960s and 1970s, helping people survive tough periods. However, with the rise in living standards, their role in daily diets has diminished. Yet, as modern diseases such as obesity, hypertension, and digestive system cancers continue to rise, people are rethinking their eating habits. As a result, traditional foods like sweet potatoes, cornmeal, and wild vegetables have gradually returned to the modern dining table.
In response to this shift, the Wuqing District Agricultural Technology Extension Center introduced and tested black sweet potatoes starting in 2003. After three years of research and field trials, they successfully developed standardized cultivation techniques and uncovered the rich nutritional value of black sweet potatoes. Compared to regular sweet potatoes, black sweet potatoes are high in dietary fiber, which aids digestion, promotes bowel movements, and helps reduce the risk of colon cancer by shortening the time harmful substances stay in the gut. They also support weight loss and delay aging.
Moreover, black sweet potatoes contain mucoprotein, which can help prevent arterial hardening. In countries like the United States and Japan, sweet potatoes are considered "healthy foods" and even "space foods" due to their nutrient density. What sets black sweet potatoes apart is their high selenium content—over 20 times that of regular sweet potatoes. Selenium is an essential trace element that boosts immunity and acts as a powerful inhibitor against liver, gastrointestinal, and skin cancers. This makes black sweet potatoes not just a nutritious food, but a functional superfood with significant health benefits.
