Picking Piglets

When buying pigs, it's essential to know how to identify healthy animals and avoid those that are sick or weak. Fasting pigs should not be purchased—look for piglets that are eager to eat, as a lack of appetite indicates poor health. Sellers often try to fatten up piglets before selling them by feeding them more, but if a piglet refuses to eat, it may be unwell. High-temperature pigs are also not a good choice. A pig with a hot ear or a red conjunctiva is likely to be sick. If the pig trembles when standing or has a body temperature above 45.5°C, it’s definitely not in good health. Diarrhea is another red flag. If you notice loose stools around the anus and on the hind legs, it could mean the pig is suffering from severe digestive issues. Such pigs are usually sick and not suitable for purchase. Dehydration is another concern. A dehydrated pig may appear dull, have dry feces, yellow urine, sunken eyes, and may lie down instead of standing. These pigs are often transported over long distances without enough water, making them weak and prone to illness. Pigs that haven’t had their ears clipped should also be avoided. This is an indicator that they haven’t received necessary vaccinations, making them more vulnerable to diseases. Healthy piglets, on the other hand, are active, have bright red skin, clear eyes, a short mouth, a moist nose, wide and straight shoulders, upright hind legs, a short tail, and breathe easily while making loud calls. They are also eager to eat, which is a sign of good health. Additionally, it's advisable to avoid purchasing pigs during the eighth month of the lunar calendar, as piglets born during this time are more susceptible to illnesses. Always inspect the pig carefully before buying, and trust your instincts—if something doesn’t look right, it’s better to walk away.
