Picking Piglets

When purchasing pigs, it's important to be cautious and observe their health carefully. Fasting pigs should not be bought because if the piglets are unhappy and have empty stomachs, it indicates they haven't eaten properly. Sellers often try to fatten up piglets before selling them to increase their weight and boost profits. However, if a piglet is unable to eat, it's likely unhealthy. High-temperature pigs are also not a good choice. When buying, check the pig’s ears—if they feel hot, it may indicate fever. If you notice redness in the piglet’s eyes or if the pig trembles when standing and has a body temperature above 45.5°C, it could be a sign of infection. Diarrhea is another red flag. Piglets with diarrhea will have loose stools near the anus and around the hind legs. The more watery the feces, the more severe the condition, and such pigs are usually sick. Dehydration is another issue to watch out for. Dehydrated piglets may appear sluggish, have dry stools, yellow urine, sunken eyes, and lie down without trying to stand. They may also show muscle tremors but have normal body temperature. These pigs are often transported over long distances without enough water, making them weak and prone to illness. Pigs that don’t have their ears clipped should be avoided. If the ears aren’t pinched with pliers, it might mean the vet hasn’t administered necessary vaccinations, increasing the risk of disease. Healthy piglets are lively, have bright red skin, clear eyes, a short mouth, a wet nose, wide and straight shoulders, upright hind legs, a short tail, and breathe easily while making loud calls. They should be active, eat well, and show no signs of distress. Additionally, it's best to avoid buying pigs during the eighth month of the lunar calendar, as piglets during this time are more vulnerable to diseases. Always take your time to inspect each animal carefully before making a purchase.
