Glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) biogas digesters are primarily divided into two types: the FRP gas pool and the integral glass steel digester. These systems have become popular in rural areas due to their durability, efficiency, and ease of installation. First, let's explore the features of the FRP arch cover biogas digester. In this system, the gas chamber is constructed using fiberglass, while the rest of the structure—such as the base and walls—is typically made of brick-concrete or concrete. This hybrid design combines the strength of traditional materials with the corrosion resistance and longevity of FRP. One major advantage is the low long-term investment cost. Although the initial construction cost may be slightly higher than that of a conventional biogas digester, the service life of an FRP system exceeds 20 years, with minimal maintenance required. In contrast, standard digesters often require repairs to the gas chamber every 3–5 years, increasing overall lifetime costs. Another benefit is the superior gas production performance. The pore size of FRP material is about 110–1000 times smaller than that of concrete, while methane molecules are approximately 40 times larger than the pores in concrete. This means that methane can easily escape from concrete structures, leading to gas loss. However, in FRP systems, methane cannot pass through the tiny pores, significantly reducing leakage. According to tests conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Biogas Research Institute, FRP gas pools produce up to 26% more biogas compared to concrete digesters. In winter, users of FRP systems can cook three meals a day, while those with other types may only manage 1–2 meals. The FRP arch cover also simplifies the construction process. Traditional digesters require complex steps like "three wipes, four brushes, and seven layers," but the FRP cover eliminates much of this work. It not only improves quality control but also reduces construction time by 3–4 days, making it faster and more efficient. Next, let's look at the capacity of the FRP gas pool. To optimize transportation, increase structural strength, and reduce costs, manufacturers have determined that the diameter of the FRP cover should be around 2.32 meters. During construction, the depth of the pool is usually 20–22 cm deeper than that of conventional digesters. This allows for a capacity of 6–8 cubic meters, which helps maintain higher temperatures in winter and increases gas output. A 6–8 cubic meter digester can produce up to 1.5–1.8 cubic meters of biogas daily. An effective gas tank volume of 1 cubic meter is sufficient, and a 2.02 cubic meter FRP digester can easily meet the storage needs of a 6–8 cubic meter system. These digesters are ideal for households with 3–5 pigs. If there are more than 5 pigs, a larger digester or dual pools may be necessary to prevent gas storage shortages. Finally, comparing the full FRP digester with the FRP arch cover model, the latter is more practical and widely used. While the fully integrated FRP system is easier to install, it has two key drawbacks: higher costs and potential structural issues. The cost of a full FRP digester is over 30% higher than that of an FRP arch system. Additionally, the joints between the body and inlet/outlet pipes are prone to cracking, especially if the ground is uneven or improperly prepared. This makes the FRP arch digester a more reliable and mature option for most users.
