After soaking the seeds and sowing them in the soil, it’s important to cover them with a layer of well-decomposed manure, approximately 0.8 to 1.5 cm thick. Too much soil covering can lead to "capped seedlings," which may fail to emerge properly or grow weakly, making them prone to lodging. Excessive coverage can also hinder seedling development.
Shading is essential after sowing. Onions do not require direct sunlight and need a moist environment. Covering the seedbed with plastic or grass helps maintain moisture and protects against heavy rain. In areas where materials are limited, using locally available coverings like straw or Artemisia halodendron is effective. These materials offer good air permeability and reduce contamination of the seedbed.
Foliar applications of phosphorus can greatly enhance root development. Since onions absorb and transport phosphorus slowly from the soil—taking about 3 to 4 days to reach the leaf tips—applying a foliar spray of 0.2% to 0.4% potassium dihydrogen phosphate 10 to 15 days before transplanting can significantly improve rooting ability. This method is efficient and highly beneficial, making it a recommended practice for improving seedling establishment and overall productivity.
