After picking fruit trees

After the fruit trees are harvested, it becomes a critical period for nutrient accumulation and flower bud differentiation. Proper orchard management during this time plays a vital role in promoting healthy flower development, enhancing cold resistance, and ensuring a higher yield in the following season. 1. **Deep Tilling of Tree Rows**: During dormancy, the soil harbors various pathogens and pests such as apple blossom blight, hawthorn flower rot, peach borer, and others. Deep tilling during this period helps to expose and destroy overwintering insects, larvae, and eggs, reducing their population for the next growing season. 2. **Orchard Cleaning**: Many pests, including early defoliation pathogens, yellow leaf roller moths, and gold-lined moths, overwinter in fallen leaves. Once most of the leaves have dropped, it's essential to clear them promptly, remove weeds, and either bury or burn them. This not only eliminates pests but also enriches the soil with organic matter. 3. **Branch Pulling**: Fruit trees that require branch pulling should be handled in the fall. At this time, branches are easier to manipulate, set quickly, and the effect of slowing growth is more pronounced, leading to better flowering. In the fall, focus on opening up non-structural branches, aiming for an angle of around 85 degrees. For branches with smaller angles, keep them between 40–50 degrees, and increase the angle slightly for older trees to reduce excessive vigor. 4. **Bark Scraping**: Many pests and eggs overwinter in the bark crevices of fruit trees, such as Pyrosphaeridae, apple borers, and spider mites. Winter bark scraping removes these hidden pests and eggs, helping to lower their numbers in the coming year. For apple trees, scrape lightly to reveal yellowish-green bark. For pears and jujubes, scrape more deeply to expose the red inner bark. Be careful not to damage the phloem while scraping. 5. **Trunk Whitewashing**: It is recommended to paint the trunk white from 1 to 1.3 meters in height. The whitewash mixture includes 2 parts lime, 0.1 part salt, 0.1 part animal and vegetable oil, 0.2 part cow dung, and 10 parts water. First, mix the lime into a milk-like solution, then add salt and oil, and finally mix in the cow dung. Apply it evenly without overdoing it. 6. **Frost Water Irrigation**: Before the soil freezes, give the entire orchard a thorough irrigation to protect the roots from frost damage. 7. **Chemical Control**: For orchards with severe pest and disease problems, apply a 45% crystalline lime sulfur solution diluted 100 times after defoliation. This helps kill pests entering dormancy and reduces the occurrence of pests and diseases in the following season. 8. **Pruning Infested Branches**: Combine winter pruning with the removal of infested branches, dead branches, and old fruits. Cut them out and burn them to eliminate pests and prevent further spread. By implementing these practices, growers can significantly improve the health and productivity of their orchards, ensuring strong growth and better yields in the future.
