In October, the majority of persimmon fruits are harvested. At this stage, the tree's nutrient accumulation exceeds its consumption, marking the beginning of a storage and nourishment phase. This period is crucial as it directly affects the yield and quality of the following year. After harvest, timely management is essential to restore tree vitality, encourage flower bud development, and ensure high and stable production in the coming season.
The best time for applying basal fertilizer is early October, accounting for about 75% of the annual fertilization. The exact amount depends on factors such as tree vigor, canopy size, yield, and soil fertility. Typically, 150–250 kg of organic fertilizer, 1–2 kg of diammonium phosphate, and 1–1.5 kg of potassium sulfate are recommended. Fertilizer should be applied by digging trenches, with a depth not exceeding 35 cm.
After fruit harvesting, leaf protection is still important. Persimmon leaves continue to perform photosynthesis effectively, helping to increase carbohydrate levels. Spraying 2–3 times with a 3% urea solution or a 300-times diluted photosynthetic micronutrient fertilizer can significantly boost leaf photosynthesis, enhance nutrient reserves, and improve flowering and shoot growth in the next season.
After defoliation, pruning is necessary. Dead, diseased, overlapping, thin, or weak branches should be removed, while other branches should be pruned appropriately. For last year’s fruiting branches, cut back to 2–3 buds from the base. Long, old, or large branches on aging trees should be shortened as long as there are new shoots, encouraging new growth. On vigorous trees, some shoots should be pruned to prevent excessive growth and ensure balanced fruiting.
Weeds, fallen leaves, and fruit remnants should be cleared from the orchard. Any remaining bark should be removed from the trunk, and old, rough bark scraped off and burned. The orchard should be tilled to a depth of 30 cm, especially before the growing season. A total of 3–5 sprays of 3–5° lime sulfur should be applied to eliminate overwintering pests and pathogens. Additionally, if anthracnose is present, apply 40% thiophanate-methyl at a 300-times dilution. Trees should also be protected by spraying with a mixture of 4 kg of lime, 2 kg of sulfur, and 17 kg of water. (Source: China Plant Protection Network – Wei Linfei)
