Zero-emission pig raising does not require flushing pigs

Zero-emission pig farming is a modern, eco-friendly approach that eliminates the need for traditional cleaning methods.
In a recent visit to Zeng Yongsheng’s pig farm in Maoyuan Village, Fanzhai Town, Fengshun County, reporters from Meizhou News observed a clean and well-maintained environment. Unlike conventional pig farms, there were no workers seen hosing down the barns or dealing with the strong odors of manure. Instead, the pigs roamed freely in large pens filled with sawdust and chaff, creating a much more pleasant atmosphere.
Luo Meihong, director of the Fengshun County Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau, explained that this method, known as "zero-discharge ecological pig farming," was developed through collaboration between local and city-level agricultural departments. It has proven to be both effective and environmentally sustainable.
The process involves using microbial strains—specifically golden vine bacteria—to break down pig waste naturally. This means there's no need to flush the barns, eliminating water usage and pollution. The bedding is only changed once a year, and it becomes high-quality organic fertilizer.
The Meizhou City government recently launched an initiative to support zero-discharge farming, allocating one million yuan annually to promote this technology. With active promotion by local authorities, Fengshun County aims to achieve zero-emission farming on over 70% of its pig farms within five years.
Zeng Yongsheng, a 50-year-old farmer, shared his experience. He and his brother started raising pigs using this new method last October, building a facility that can hold over 500 pigs. They raised their first batch of 540 pigs, achieving a feed-to-meat ratio of 2.3:1, which is better than the average of 2.5 to 2.8:1 in traditional methods. Each pig generated about 140 yuan in profit.
According to Zeng, managing the farm requires just two people, compared to the 200 pigs that could be handled by a larger team using traditional methods. The absence of daily washing and cleaning significantly reduces labor costs.
Luo added that traditional pig farming typically uses around 65 cubic meters of water per day for cleaning, making water and pollution major challenges. The zero-emission system not only saves water but also reduces energy use and labor. Additionally, the use of beneficial microbes improves pig health, reducing the need for antibiotics and enhancing meat quality.
According to local animal husbandry data, Meizhou has made significant progress in sustainable livestock farming. As of June, the city had 1.8855 million live pigs, with a total of 121,393 heads. Meat production reached 151,700 tons, showing nearly a 10% increase compared to the previous year. This success highlights the growing potential of eco-friendly pig farming in the region.
