In October, the majority of persimmon fruits are harvested gradually. At this stage, the tree's nutrient accumulation exceeds its consumption, and it enters a phase of storage and nourishment. This period is crucial for the tree, as the nutrients accumulated during this time directly influence the yield and quality of the following year. After fruit harvesting, timely management is essential to restore the tree's vitality, encourage flower bud differentiation, and ensure high yields and stable production in the coming season.
The ideal time for applying basal fertilizer is early October, accounting for approximately 75% of the annual fertilizer application. The exact amount depends on factors such as tree vigor, canopy size, yield, and soil fertility. Typically, each persimmon tree receives 150–250 kg of organic fertilizer, 1–2 kg of diammonium phosphate, and 1–1.5 kg of potassium sulfate. Fertilizer should be applied by digging trenches, with a depth not exceeding 35 cm.
After the harvest, the leaves still have strong photosynthetic capabilities, which can help increase carbohydrate levels. Spraying 2–3 times with a 3% urea solution or a 300-fold dilution of photosynthetic micronutrient fertilizer can significantly enhance leaf photosynthesis, improve nutrient storage, and promote better flowering and shoot growth in the next growing season.
After defoliation, pruning is necessary to remove dead branches, diseased shoots, overlapping branches, and thin or weak branches. Other branches should be appropriately shortened. For the current year’s fruiting branches, cut back to two or three buds at the base. Long, old branches on aging trees should be pruned to where new shoots appear, encouraging new growth. On vigorous trees, some shoots should be cut back to prepare for balanced fruiting and avoid excessive or poor yields.
Weeds, fallen leaves, and fruit debris in the orchard should be removed. Any remaining bark should be stripped from the tree, and the rough, old bark on the trunk should be scraped off and burned. The orchard should be tilled to a depth of 30 cm, especially under the canopy. Before bud break, the entire area should be sprayed with 3–5 degrees of lime sulfur to eliminate overwintering pests and pathogens. Additionally, if there is anthracnose, apply 40% thiophanate-methyl diluted 300 times. Trees should also be protected by spraying them with a mixture of 4 kg of lime, 2 kg of sulfur, and 17 kg of water. (Source: China Plant Protection Network – Wei Linfei)
