How to prevent celery hollow

Recently, vegetable farmers have reported that the celery hollowing issue was more severe last year, which affected both the quality and taste of the produce. This year, they planted celery quickly, but many are now concerned about how to prevent this problem. What steps can be taken to avoid celery hollowing? Celery hollowing refers to a condition where white, cork-like tissue appears in the center of the petiole, starting from the base and moving upward. This issue is often caused by factors such as water or nutrient deficiency, irregular watering or fertilization, excessive fertilizer use, dry conditions, low temperatures, late harvesting, or overuse of gibberellin. These stressors can disrupt the plant's normal development, leading to internal hollow spaces. To address this issue, farmers can implement several effective strategies: 1. **Choose the right planting location**: Celery thrives best in well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Avoid clay or sandy soils, as they can lead to poor root development and increased risk of hollowing. 2. **Select high-quality varieties**: Varieties like American celery, Tianjin solid celery, Bailey celery, and Ventura are known for their resistance to hollowing and better growth performance. 3. **Maintain optimal growing conditions**: The ideal temperature range is 15°C to 23°C during the day, with nighttime temperatures between 13°C and 18°C. Soil temperature should stay within 13°C to 18°C to support healthy root growth. 4. **Proper water and fertilizer management**: Apply sufficient base fertilizer, such as 5,000 kg of high-quality organic manure per mu. Adding 100–200 kg of fermented chicken manure or 15 kg of diammonium phosphate per acre helps ensure balanced nutrition. During the growing season, apply top-dressing with quick-acting nitrogen and potash fertilizers, about 20 kg per mu every 15 days. Water regularly but avoid overwatering, keeping the soil moisture between 60% and 80%. 5. **Monitor and correct nutrient deficiencies**: If boron deficiency is suspected, spray 0.1% boron solution at 40 kg per mu, repeating 1–3 times every 5–7 days. Foliage spraying should be done in the afternoon when leaves are wet. For yellowing leaves, apply 0.1% urea or chlorophyll solution. Gibberellin can enhance growth when used properly—apply it 30 and 20 days before harvest at a concentration of 20 mg/kg, optionally adding 2% urea and potassium dihydrogen phosphate to the solution. 6. **Control pests and diseases**: Regular monitoring and timely intervention help maintain plant health. Harvest celery when it reaches maturity, typically 80–90 days after planting, to avoid over-ripening and reduce the risk of hollowing. By following these practices, farmers can significantly reduce the occurrence of celery hollowing and improve overall crop quality.
