Liquid mulch, also known as the soil surface film, is a high-tech innovation developed through years of research by the Institute of Soil and Fertilizers at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in collaboration with Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical Company. This product is essentially an emulsion created by adding special additives to asphalt, which is commonly found in everyday life. It has a strong adhesive property that helps bind soil particles into ideal aggregates, similar to the role of humus in maintaining soil fertility. This process can significantly improve soil structure within a short time, enhancing soil permeability and making it especially effective for sandy or overly compacted soils.
When applied, the liquid film is sprayed onto the soil surface using a pressure sprayer and dries to form a multi-layer chemical protective film. This film not only stabilizes the topsoil but also reduces evaporation, helping the soil retain moisture for a longer period. As a result, soil moisture levels can increase by over 20%, achieving excellent water conservation. The reduction in moisture loss also minimizes heat loss from the soil, thereby increasing its temperature. Moreover, since the liquid mulch is black or dark brown, it enhances the absorption of solar radiation, further boosting soil temperature. On average, this method can raise soil temperature by 2°C to 4°C, acting like a thin protective layer that improves soil stability and reduces erosion and desertification risks.
Compared to traditional plastic mulch, liquid mulch offers several advantages. It is easy to apply—simply dilute the original solution 4 to 5 times and spray it evenly with an agricultural sprayer. One person can complete the entire process without difficulty. Additionally, there’s no need for manual film breaking, as seedlings can naturally penetrate the film, saving labor. After completing its function of retaining moisture, warming the soil, and protecting seedlings, the liquid mulch naturally degrades, acting as a soil conditioner and continuing to improve soil quality.
This technology is highly versatile and can be used in areas where plastic mulch is unsuitable, such as slopes, irregular plots, and steep terrains. Field tests have shown that crops treated with liquid mulch experience significant yield increases. For example, underground crops like peanuts, potatoes, and sweet potatoes show an average production increase of about 20%. In winter wheat trials, the crop exhibited stronger growth before winter, developed a robust root system, and had a lower death rate after wintering. The plants greened up earlier and produced more tillers and ears per mu compared to the control group.
Currently, the Beijing Fengrunda High-tech Development Co., Ltd., established by the Beijing Institute of Soil and Fertilizers and other units under the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, is responsible for the development and commercial production of liquid mulch. Over the past two years, large-scale field trials have been conducted in provinces such as Heilongjiang, Shandong, Hebei, and Xinjiang, with positive feedback from farmers. Many local farmers have praised the product, saying, “Using liquid mulch saves time and labor, doesn’t cause pollution, and boosts productivity—it's truly a great way to support ecological agriculture.â€
