Fermented feedstuffs play a crucial role in pig fattening, directly impacting the economic returns for farmers. To improve the growth performance of slaughter pigs under similar feeding conditions, enhancing the palatability of feed through fermentation is essential. Products like Ginba not only make the feed more appealing to pigs but also introduce beneficial microorganisms that boost immunity and disease resistance once they reach the gut.
Raw materials such as rice husks, sweet potato vines, peanut leaves, corn cobs, distillers' grains, and chicken manure are typically hard to use directly as pig feed. However, by adding an appropriate amount of Ginba starter, these materials can be fermented into nutritious, aromatic, and easily digestible feed. This biological feed is long-lasting, rich in nutrients, and helps reduce grain usage over time when used properly.
Using coarsely fermented feeds in combination with conventional concentrates is an effective strategy. Pigs should be fed with more coarse food and less frequent meals, adjusting based on temperature. In summer, increasing the thickness of the feed helps meet their water needs, while in winter, it’s important to avoid dilute feeding to prevent heat loss from excessive urination. Feeding pigs five times a day ensures better digestion and energy retention.
When preparing fermented feed, coarsely fermented material can be soaked in cold water for several hours. After sieving through a fine mesh, the finer portion can be given to suckling piglets, with a small amount of fried soybean flour added to enhance aroma and stimulate appetite. The coarser fraction is suitable for older pigs. For weaned piglets, adding sugar-rich ingredients like cooked mink skin, carrots, citrus peels, or sugar scraps can improve both palatability and average daily weight gain.
Monitoring feed intake and adjusting the ratio of natural feed accordingly is key to maintaining good pig health. Ensuring that feed in the trough is consumed promptly prevents spoilage and keeps pigs interested in eating. With proper fermentation techniques and feeding strategies, farmers can significantly improve pig growth efficiency while reducing feed costs.
