What are the prospects of lazy Chinese pig raising law in Yunnan?

What Are the Prospects of the "Lazy Farmer" Pig Raising Method in Yunnan?

As living standards improve, people are becoming more health-conscious and are demanding higher quality pork. At the same time, environmental awareness is growing stronger. The challenge lies in increasing production while taking environmental concerns into account, and still achieving a good return on investment. The modern pig industry is shifting towards sustainability, environmental protection, health, and economic efficiency. In the face of fierce competition, it's essential for farmers to think differently and explore new breeding techniques. One such emerging method is the "lazy farmer" pig raising technology, which involves using a composting system for pig waste. Although still in its early stages, this technique has shown great potential in both cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits. As society develops and environmental awareness increases, this technology is likely to become a key practice in the future of pig farming.

The pig-breeding industry plays a vital role in Yunnan’s agriculture. Through initiatives like establishing commodity pig counties, building six comprehensive service systems, training technical personnel, and implementing experimental, demonstration, and extension programs, the province saw a significant increase in meat production. In 2002, the total meat output reached 2.35 million tons, with 1.96 million tons being pork—accounting for 83.05% of the total. On average, each person had access to 55.01 kg of meat, including 45.68 kg of pork. This marked a doubling since 1990. The total value of animal husbandry reached 22.35 billion yuan, making up 30.3% of the total agricultural output. Yunnan has become one of China's major animal husbandry provinces, ranking 12th nationally and third among western provinces. Animal husbandry has seen 24 years of continuous growth. However, in the 21st century, the pig industry must move toward safe, healthy, high-quality, efficient, and sustainable development.

The "lazy farmer" pig raising technique differs from traditional methods. Pig manure and urine are stored within the pig house for long periods, without being discharged or spreading to surrounding areas. Instead, they are broken down by soil microorganisms, eliminating dirt and odor. The sewage treatment process is harmless. The pig house is designed with open and closed skylights that allow for proper ventilation and heat exchange, creating a comfortable environment. Cold and warm air circulates, and evaporation at the bottom helps maintain optimal conditions, keeping the area clean, odor-free, and free from flies and maggots. Additionally, the manure and urine are converted into feed resources, which pigs can eat directly, eliminating the need for manual removal.

This method also saves feed, reduces costs, and improves efficiency. Microorganisms break down pig waste into inorganic substances and bacterial proteins that pigs can consume. Sawdust fibers are also decomposed into fermentable sugars, providing additional nutrients for the pigs. This reduces the need for concentrated feed. Preliminary tests show that more than 10% of concentrate feed can be saved. Moreover, the compost bed doesn’t need frequent replacement, and there's no need for manual cleaning or washing of the pig pens. This not only reduces labor costs but also lowers water usage, making the entire process more economical and environmentally friendly.

In conclusion, the "lazy farmer" pig raising method offers a promising solution for sustainable and efficient pig farming in Yunnan. With its ability to reduce pollution, save resources, and lower operational costs, it aligns well with the future direction of the pig industry. As environmental regulations become stricter and consumer demand for eco-friendly products rises, this innovative approach is expected to gain more traction and play a significant role in shaping the future of pig farming in the region.
