Sweet potatoes are known for their resilience, but they have a long growth cycle and require significant nutrients from the soil. To maximize yield, it's essential to apply a balanced base fertilizer based on soil test results. A combination of organic, inorganic, and biotechnological inputs should be used. For soils with above-average fertility—containing more than 1% organic matter, over 0.05% available nitrogen, 20 ppm available phosphorus, and 1 million ppm available potassium—a base fertilizer should be applied. This typically includes 3,000–4,000 kg of high-quality farmyard manure per mu, along with 2–3 kg of biological bacterial fertilizer (with over 200 million bacteria per gram) and 30 kg of a high-quality NPK compound fertilizer (with over 15% NPK). If farmyard manure is unavailable, you can use Granville brand fulvic acid to activate phosphorus and potassium fertilizers at a rate of 50–60 kg per mu.
The base fertilizer should be applied at a depth of 25–30 cm, as sweet potato roots mainly develop in this layer. Deep plowing and ridge-making are recommended to improve soil structure and enhance root development.
Top-dressing is also important to supplement nutrients, especially for under-fertilized fields. Apply amino acid chelated NPK fertilizer at 7.5–10 kg per mu, or 2–3 kg of dihydrogen phosphate potassium. Fertilization methods include acupuncture or dissolving in water and applying directly to the roots. Each application should be around 0.25–0.5 kg.
Foliar fertilization is another effective technique to balance nutrition and promote healthy plant growth. Using products like Lei Li 2000 functional compound liquid fertilizer, spray 3–4 times during the growing season, using 30 bags of 30 kg of diluted solution per acre. This can increase yield by 20–30%. Alternatively, Laoxiang brand high-efficiency biological liquid fertilizer can be used, sprayed 3 times throughout the season. Mix 25 grams of sweet potato-specific liquid fertilizer in 15 kg of water and spray on leaves. This method can boost production by approximately 30%.
By combining these three approaches—base fertilizer, top-dressing, and foliar feeding—you can ensure that your sweet potato crop receives all the necessary nutrients at the right time, leading to healthier plants and higher yields.
