The fish and its bones are commonly known as "Jihua Fish" or "Jupei Fish," and they are typically found in rivers and lakes across the plains of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. In natural lakes, second-instar fish can reach up to 250 grams, with some individuals growing as large as 500 grams. However, over time, due to factors such as overfishing and water pollution, the natural population of this species has drastically declined. In recent years, provinces like Jiangsu and Zhejiang have successfully carried out artificial breeding, seedling cultivation, and commercial farming experiments for these fish. This species is favored for its attractive appearance, omnivorous diet, fast growth, high yield, tender meat, and strong market demand. Recently, the price has reached 15-20 yuan per 500 grams. Despite these advantages, the fish is known for being aggressive, sensitive to low oxygen levels, and not very suitable for pond farming.
First, for main pond raising: 1. Pond conditions: Choose a well-watered pond with convenient drainage and irrigation. Before stocking fish, apply quicklime at 200 kg per mu to disinfect the water and clear the pond. 2. Stocking fish: In early spring, stock 1,500 juvenile Jihua Fish per acre, along with 120 carp (50 grams each) and 100 white bream (300 grams each). Also include turtles, clams, grass carp, and other compatible species in the main pond. 3. Feeding: Mainly use artificial feed, supplemented with plankton cultivation. Feed twice daily, with a feeding rate of 1.0% to 2.0%. Combine organic and inorganic fertilizers to promote plankton growth. 4. Water quality management: Apply lime twice a month (40 kg per acre) during the growing season, keeping the pH between 7.2 and 7.8. Use various aeration methods to maintain good water quality.
Second, for secondary pond setup: Select ponds with abundant, fresh, and oxygen-rich water. Cultivate 200-300 Jihua Fish per acre, ensuring good water quality and dissolved oxygen levels. By the end of the year, the fish can be harvested for sale. This method helps ensure healthy growth and high yields while maintaining ecological balance in the pond environment.
