When is the best time to spray pesticides in summer?

A farmer friend recently asked me when the best time is to spray pesticides during the summer. I explained that the ideal window for pesticide application is usually between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., or around 5 p.m. in the afternoon. This timing is based on both environmental conditions and pest behavior. By around 9 a.m., the morning dew has mostly dried, and the temperature is still relatively mild. This is when many insect pests are most active — they're feeding, moving around, and mating. Spraying during this period ensures that the pesticide isn't washed away by moisture, which could reduce its effectiveness. Additionally, the lower temperatures prevent the chemicals from breaking down too quickly, maintaining their potency. In the late afternoon, around 5 p.m., the sun begins to set, and the light becomes softer. This is when many nocturnal insects become more active, searching for food and mates. Spraying at this time can be just as effective, if not more so, because the pests are more likely to come into contact with the pesticide. It's also important to consider wind speed and weather conditions. Avoid spraying on windy days, as it can cause the pesticide to drift and reduce its effectiveness. Similarly, if rain is expected soon after application, it might wash away the pesticide before it has time to work. Overall, choosing the right time to spray not only improves the effectiveness of the treatment but also helps reduce the amount of pesticide needed, making it a more efficient and environmentally friendly practice.
