Laiwu City, located in Shandong Province, is famously known as the "Hometown of Chinese Ginger." With an annual ginger planting area exceeding 300,000 mu, the region plays a significant role in China's ginger industry. However, one major challenge has long been the disposal of ginger seedlings, which are too spicy for animals to eat. Every year, after harvesting, around 400,000 tons of ginger seedlings end up as waste. In 1996, Zhen Guangming, chairman of Zhenpu Feed Co., Ltd., successfully conducted experiments on feeding ginger seedlings to livestock, marking a breakthrough in the utilization of this byproduct. By 1998, he had also solved the issue of storing ginger seedlings effectively. In 2003, he founded the Zhenpu Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Science and Technology Center, focusing on research and development of healthy feed for livestock and poultry using ginger seedlings. In 2004, he invented a special type of health feed for animals and obtained a national invention patent, filling a gap in the domestic feed industry. His innovation earned him prestigious awards, including the Gold Award at the "German International Patent Technology Achievement Fair."
The image shows workers from Laiwu City Zhaopu Feed Co., Ltd. busy processing ginger seedlings—crushing them, drying them, and finally turning them into nutritious and healthy feed for livestock and poultry. This innovative approach not only reduces waste but also adds value to what was once considered a discarded product. Through continuous research and development, Zhen Guangming has transformed a local agricultural byproduct into a sustainable and profitable resource, setting a great example for other regions facing similar challenges. His efforts have helped boost the local economy while promoting environmental sustainability. Today, the success of Zhenpu Feed serves as a model of how traditional agriculture can be reimagined through innovation and technology.
