American Redfish Adult Culture Technology

There are two main approaches to raising adult redfish: semi-intensive pond culture and intensive indoor flow-through systems. However, the semi-intensive pond method is more commonly used due to its cost-effectiveness and ease of management. First, wintering is an essential phase in the production cycle. It typically takes around 12 months for the fish to reach marketable size, which requires them to be overwintered to ensure proper growth and survival. Next, stocking is a critical step. The recommended stocking density is usually between 300 to 600 fish per 15 hectares, with fingerlings measuring approximately 5 cm in length. Before stocking, the pond should be filled with water 1 to 2 weeks in advance. Fertilizer is typically applied once when the water depth reaches 30 cm, and then again once the pond is fully filled. If smaller fingerlings are used, they should be stocked when the water depth is about 30 cm. As the water temperature increases, the water level should be gradually raised, and feeding should occur three times daily. If the fingerlings are larger than 15 cm, it’s important to maintain a sufficient population of plankton in the pond. If not, additional fertilizer should be added to support the food chain. The water temperature at the time of stocking should be above 10°C to ensure optimal conditions for the fish. Regarding feed, American redfish require a diet with at least 35% protein, including more than 12% fishmeal. Adding shrimp head powder can enhance the feed's palatability, making it more attractive to the fish. Additionally, the size of the feed pellets should match the size of the fish to ensure efficient consumption and digestion.
