Cotton is a thermophilic crop that requires relatively high temperatures for germination and emergence. Sowing too early, combined with low temperatures, can lead to prolonged emergence periods, increased nutrient consumption, weak seedling viability, and higher susceptibility to diseases, often resulting in "early but not full" or "early but not strong" seedlings. On the other hand, sowing too late may cause rapid emergence ("fast Qi"), but it limits the use of the effective growing season, leading to late-maturing cotton, lower quality, and poor yield.
The key to successful cotton planting lies in ensuring strong and healthy seedlings while maintaining good stand establishment. Insect-resistant cotton varieties, in particular, have certain challenges. Their seeds typically contain lower fat content, an imbalance between protein and fat, and reduced total nutrient levels, which makes it harder for the seedlings to get enough energy during germination and early growth. These varieties also tend to be less tolerant of cold temperatures, resulting in slower emergence and weaker seedling vigor. Therefore, the sowing time for insect-resistant cotton should not be too early. It's essential to follow the principle of "proper timing."
In general, when the 5 cm soil temperature remains stable at 14°C to 15°C for five consecutive days, and the soil moisture is adequate with suitable humidity, and there’s no significant cold snap expected in the near future, it's a good time to plant. In normal years, medium-maturing and insect-resistant cotton varieties are best planted around the period of Gu Yu (April 15th to 25th) using mulch. For open cotton, sowing should be delayed slightly, ideally between April 20th and 30th. In saline-alkali soils, it's advisable to wait until the 5 cm ground temperature stabilizes at 16°C, and planting should take place after rainy weather, preferably before May 1st.
Within the appropriate sowing window, it's important to minimize the sowing period so that the cotton is planted at the optimal time. This helps ensure a complete and uniform stand, laying a solid foundation for healthy growth and high yield. By carefully choosing the right time based on local conditions, farmers can maximize the potential of their cotton crops.
