Leek, onion, garlic, and other members of the allium family thrive in cooler weather and have limited heat tolerance. However, they are relatively resistant to cold. During the hot summer and autumn months, using shade nets can significantly promote growth, enhance yield, and improve product quality. For instance, when leeks are covered with shade nets, their leaf tips remain unscorched, the leaves stay green, and overall quality is noticeably improved. Similarly, garlic planted in August and covered with shade nets showed a 44.54% increase in seedling rate compared to uncovered plants, along with significant improvements in plant height and leaf count.
Shade net coverage for onions and garlic can be applied in different stages. Before seedlings emerge, floating row covers can be used. Once the plants come up, they can be protected with greenhouses, flat sheds, or small arch-shaped sheds. The floating cover can also be layered or combined with materials like straw on top of the net, and it should be removed immediately after emergence. Greenhouse structures, on the other hand, are typically covered early on. However, for certain crops like white sandbread (a type of vegetable), the covering period can be extended, and continuous coverage inside the greenhouse can even be used to reduce the labor required for removal.
In recent years, many vegetable farmers in the suburbs of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, have successfully adopted shade net technology to cultivate yellow leeks during the summer and autumn seasons, achieving considerable economic benefits. The method involves using small arch sheds to cover leeks with 2 to 3 layers of shade nets from June to July. Farmers also use stalks of white or rice straw to construct the sheds, ensuring good ventilation while providing effective shading. This technique helps create a cooler growing environment, which is essential for the development of tender, yellow leeks with high market value.
