Leek, onion, garlic, and other members of the allium family thrive in cooler conditions and have poor heat tolerance. However, they are relatively resistant to cold. During the hot summer and autumn months, using shade nets can significantly promote growth, improve yield, and enhance quality. For example, when leeks are covered with shade nets, their leaf tips do not get scorched, and the leaves remain green and of higher quality. In a study, garlic planted in August and covered with shade nets showed a 44.54% increase in seedling rate compared to uncovered plants, along with significant improvements in plant height and number of leaves.
Shade nets are commonly used for covering onions and garlic throughout their growth cycle. Before germination, a floating row cover can be placed over the seeds. After emergence, greenhouse structures, flat sheds, or small arch tunnels can be used to provide additional protection. Floating covers can be layered or combined with materials like straw on top of the netting, and they can be removed immediately once the plants emerge. Greenhouse and shed covers should be applied early in the season. However, the shading period for white sandbread (a type of vegetable) can be longer than for other crops. In some cases, continuous coverage under a greenhouse is possible, which helps reduce labor by avoiding the need to remove the cover regularly.
In recent years, many vegetable farmers in the suburbs of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, have successfully adopted the use of shade nets for growing yellow leeks during the summer and autumn seasons, achieving excellent economic returns. The method involves using small arch sheds and covering leeks with 2 to 3 layers of shade netting from June to July. Additionally, the sheds are often topped with white or rice straw stalks to ensure proper ventilation while maintaining shade. This technique effectively cools the growing environment, promoting the development of tender, yellow leeks with high market value.
