Camellia vinifera

Scientific name: *Vinca major* Linn

Common Name: Periwinkle

Family: Apocynaceae

Morphological Characteristics:

*Vinca major* is a low-growing, spreading plant with long, creeping stems that can reach up to 2 meters in length. The leaves are elliptical, opposite, and petiolate, with a bright green, glossy surface and a yellowish margin. This plant has an exceptional ability to spread and cover the ground quickly. After being introduced and cultivated at Qiongdong Guidong Station in Qidong City, it was observed that it exhibits strong adaptability, although it has specific soil requirements and grows rapidly.

Growth Habits:

This plant is highly shade-tolerant and cold-resistant, able to survive in temperatures as low as -7°C without frost damage when planted in open fields. It remains evergreen throughout the year, with its vines spreading and flowering in March, producing beautiful violet flowers that create a stunning carpet of green and bloom. Due to its attractive appearance, it is considered an ideal choice for ornamental landscaping and ground cover.

Cultivation:

*Vinca major* is easy to propagate through cuttings, division, or layering, with cuttings being the most common method. The best time for propagation is before spring sprouting, during the rainy season, or between September and October. For cuttings, select one- or two-year-old branches, cut them into 10 cm sections with 2–3 pairs of leaves, space them 10 cm apart, place them in water, and cover with shade nets. Keep the soil moist and provide partial shade until they establish roots, after which they can be transplanted to the field. When growing in pots, it's important to prune regularly to encourage branching. Keep the soil consistently moist and fertilize every two months. Prune in summer and autumn to control excessive growth. In open fields, it remains green and healthy all year round.

Pests and Diseases:

*Vinca major* is prone to wilt, ulcers, and leaf spot diseases. These can be controlled using a 1:1 mixture of Bordeaux liquid. Common pests include scale insects and root worms. For scale insects, spray with 25% imidacloprid EC diluted to 1000 times. For root worms, apply 3% carbofuran granules.

Applications:

In landscaping, *Vinca major* is often used as a ground cover, alongside other plants such as turfgrass, Bermuda grass, tall fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass, bentgrass, horseshoe vetch, white clover, and red shamrock. These plants are widely used in urban and rural landscapes, enhancing the visual appeal of public spaces and becoming increasingly popular among gardeners and landscape designers. Its versatility, beauty, and ease of maintenance make it a top choice for creating lush, green environments.
